This weekend, the Bronxville girls soccer team will be one of three Review teams vying for a state title, as both the Broncos and Mamaroneck’s field hockey and boys soccer teams will head upstate to participate in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association final four. Both the Broncos and the Tigers girls teams have had past successes at the state level, but it remains to be seen whether or not this year’s trips to Cortland, Centereach and Middletown will be fruitful ones.
The Class B Broncos were the first local team to punch its tickets to the state semis, winning its regional final game against Section IV Chenago Valley 3-0 on Nov. 5 at Arlington High School. Bronxville had little trouble with the Warriors, taking a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal by Maddy Stupart, and getting two more from senior Kiki Tormey to put the game away in the second.
Offensive versatility and keeper play have been strengths for the Broncos, especially during its playoff run. In its Section I finals game against Briarcliff and last Friday’s game against Chenago Valley, five different players have found the net and Milly Koenig has kept a clean sheet in net for Bronxville. But they will face perhaps their toughest test of the year on Saturday, when they take on an undefeated Section VII Sarnac team that won its regional final game over Skaneateles 4-2, while outshooting its opponents 17-5. The Chiefs have outscored their opponents 11-2 over the course of the state tournament.
Like the Broncos, the Mamaroneck field hockey team also notched a 3-0 victory in the regional finals to earn a trip to keep its season alive. On Nov. 7, the Tigers outclassed Section IX champion Kingston, outshooting the Tigers 20-4 in the win. Freshman Catharine D’Arcy scored her team’s first goal while senior captain Hannah Rogoff added the other two. Goalie Jane McNally had four saves.
On Saturday, the Tigers will take on Section II Shenendehowa in the semifinals. The Plainsmen topped Baldwinsville 2-0 on Sunday. Shenendehowa won its last state championship in 2016 one year after the Tigers’ 2015 crown.
Finally, the Mamaroneck boys soccer team will also find itself in the mix for a state championship this weekend, for the first time in the program’s history. Mamaroneck beat Corning-Painted Post 4-0 on Nov. 6 on the strength of two goals from Milton Mancias-Magana to add a regional title to the club’s list of the first-time accolades. The will take on Section V Hilton on Nov. 13 at Middletown High School. Unlike the Tigers, Hilton has won a state title before, but the school’s last win came back in 1987. The Cadets—who last made the state semifinals in 2015—beat Williamsville North 1-0 to set up the showdown with Mamaroneck.
