Ziogas, Huguenots hold Tigers at bay in regular season finale

Sometimes, when a player gets hot, the only thing for an opposing team to do is throw up its hands and hope the damage they are doing isn’t irreparable. Such was the case for Mamaroneck on Feb. 14, when they ran into a dialed-in Stella Ziogas and the New Rochelle Huguenots.

With her deft shooting touch, Ziogas carried her team to victory on Friday, netting 34 points in a 57-44 New Rochelle win over a fierce league rival.

Ziogas shined both from the free-throw line and behind-the-arc on Friday, knocking down 19 foul shots and draining four three-pointers en route to a statement win over the Tigers. The senior said that New Rochelle came into this second meeting with Mamaroneck keenly aware that they needed to make some adjustments if they wanted to avenge their 58-53 loss to the Tigers earlier in the season.

“We were thinking about that game, and we definitely wanted to do better this time,” she said. “We didn’t play bad last time, but we knew we could beat them if we played better.”

Addison Dorfman led the way for Mamaroneck, scoring a team-high 17 points, but the Huguenots were able to contain the dominant center, thanks to help defense and the play of Skye Pressley.

With the loss, Mamaroneck finishes the season at 12-8, good enough for to clinch the No. 6 seed in the Class AAA playoffs. The Tigers dropped their two final games of the regular season but will still have home-court advantage when they host league foe Scarsdale on Feb. 24. The Tigers own two wins over the Raiders this year, most recently topping Scarsdale 37-30 on Jan. 31.

The Huguenots, meanwhile, won their final two games of the season to finish with the No. 9 seed in the upcoming tournament. They hit the road and will tangle with No. 8 John Jay-East Fishkill on Monday afternoon. John Jay comes into the postseason having won five of its last six games, but Ziogas believes that Friday’s victory was a statement win for the Huguenots, who also seem to be clicking at the right time.“

We know that we’re good, we know we can fight,” said Ziogas. “So coming to get this win before the playoffs means a lot and it goes to show how hard we can fight as a team.”
