For a team with consistently high expectations, Mamaroneck made the most of its home opener last week. Hosting a solid Harrison squad, the Tigers talent and depth were on display as Mamaroneck came away with a decisive 12-6 win to start the 2024 campaign.
Jumping out to a 7-2 halftime lead, the Tigers left nothing up to chance on Thursday as they continued to imply pressure throughout the second half of the game to come away with a six-goal win.
Offensive balance was the name of the game for Mamaroneck, as eight different Tigers recorded a goal on the afternoon. Freshman Lucy Bevilacqua led with three goals in her first-ever varsity appearance while Lexi Suman and Gabby Sosa tallied two apiece. Harrison was led by three goals from Harper Lapin and two from Lila Berkery. Mamaroneck coach Rocky Lividini-Gilbert said she was pleased with the way her team came out, noting that the Tigers’ patience was integral to the victory.
“Today, we really wanted to see who would step up, and we had eight different people score, so that’s checking off a box,” said Lividini-Gilbert. “Our goalie [Molly O’Connell] did really well, we had a freshman call-up get three goals in her first game, so we’re going to look to build off the good vibes from this.”
The head coach noted that—with talented newcomers like Bevilacqua joining a roster filled with seasoning players that took Mamaroneck to the Class AA semifinals last year—Mamaroneck will have a combination of youth and experience on the roster.
“It’s a good mix,” said Lividin-Gilbert. “I think the newer girls are bringing a real enthusiasm and as they work with some of our returning players, they are going to get a better idea of what is going to be expected of them at this level.”
The Tigers will be back in action this week when they kick off a three-game road tip on Friday, April 5. In the next five days, Mamaroneck will take on Clarkstown South, Yorktown, and new Rochelle before coming back home to host Hendrick Hudson on April 12.
As the season wears on, said Lividini-Gilberti, the Tigers will look to continue their strong play as they coalesce as one unit.
“I think if we keep on doing what we need to do and keep on getting better each day, we will be fine,” said the head coach. “We made a deep run in the playoffs last year and that’s always our goal and it’s definitely an attainable one for this group.”
